There’s no doubt about it: SnapAdventures’ most popular adventure is the often-imitated, never-duplicated, Great Wall camping trip! While most visitors take in the Badaling or Mutianyu section of the Beijing Great Wall, you can do better than that – get away from the crowds and tourist shops and experience the Wall in a totally different way.
On SnapAdventures’ weekend camping trip, you’ll explore the Jiankou section of the Beijing Great Wall, one of the unrestored parts in the area, with its near-vertical stairs, crumbling towers and turrets. The white rock used in its construction during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) makes this part of the Wall stand out strikingly against the heavily forested hillsides, providing spectacular scenery and breathtaking backdrops.
Avid hikers should be particularly enthused as you’ll be clambering over fallen stones as you make your way up the mountainside (the “Stairway to Heaven” is more like freeclimbing than walking), all while carrying your camping pack. At night, enjoy a well-deserved beer or two around the fire pit in our campsite – an old guard tower – then fall asleep under the stars (yes, you can see stars!) and wake to a glorious sunrise.
Tents can be rented to avoid exposure to the elements, but many people prefer to sleep out in the open. Camping backpacks can also be rented, as we recommend you keep your hands free to help with the climb.
EXAMPLE ITINERARY
* SnapAdventures reserves the right to change the itinerary without notice. However, we will only do so if we believe it’s in the best interests of the trip – ie. to reduce travel times, minimize hassles, etc.
DAY 1
Bus to Jiankou staging village. Hike the Great Wall to campsite.
DAY 2
Wake up to see sunrise and enjoy breakfast before the hike down to the village. Bus to Beijing.

Hi there,
I am living in Beijing right now and my friend from Germany is coming to visit me. I’d love to do the Great Wall Hiking with her but she is only here from the 29th to the 31st… Could you organise another tour then? Sounds like Lore would be pleased with that too
So we’d already be 3 people…
Please let me know fast.
Leonie
